Why should I DIY (Do It Yourself) instead of selling my foreign language rights?

Only you can say for sure which is a better fit for you: DIY or selling your foreign language rights.

DIY has up-front expenses and plenty of project management, but swift royalty returns you don't share.

While there are no up-front expenses or project management work when rights are sold to a foreign publisher, it can take 18 months to 2 years for them to publish your first foreign title. Also, payment structures may push royalty delivery another 6 months past that. It could be 2.5 years before you see any income. Then it is most likely 35% (or less, especially if using an agent) instead of 70% (current retailer royalty split).

On top of that, if you've sold your foreign rights, you still need to personally set up a mailing list, a section of your web site with your foreign titles and other author branding features...all in secondary languages (for which you need a translator).

If you intend to sell your foreign rights, this class is not for you.

This class is specifically for DIY-ers and includes the author branding in secondary languages.
